Preparation for Give+ Project

Monday, March 31, 2008 Monday I decide to draw 10 sketches a day before September.A sketch from an artist is like a tool and surface for day dreaming. A sense of void help the automatical reflection of hands and mind. From sketches, I can enter all master's mind and thoughts. When I gaze at Mattisse's flowing drawing style and Picasso's chubby female figures, suddenly, I understand something, something that cannot tell through words. My friend, Monica , told me that it has nice studio and beach. Monica told me about Sainta Monica. Ha Ha Ha. I feel like it should be a place with warm sunshine and passionate dance scense. I have not met with Clayton yet, but I think he has a delicate taste in art. Posted by Sue-ching You 游素清 at 4:00 AM 0 comments Labels: Preparation for Give+ Project Albright-...

Artists

Friday, September 19, 2008 David Amico At the ACE Gallery Beverly Hills, I saw David Amico's exhibition, Drift-Trace Paintings . He is probably the best exhibition and artist I like the most after several gallery walks and visits in the west of LA.A portfolic presentation, strong composition, and color are what I admire him the most. Hope that I will be able to meet with him soon. It was nearly sunsetting, the sunshine on his work and making some enlongated shadows. I like the green door with "NUESTRO PUEBLO" on it the best. The shape and form is like coming out from the wonderland of a fairytale. What he is doing is truely a vision becoming reality. Reading and Review

Thursday, April 3, 2008 La Musique, 1939 "The themes of music and of two seated females in complementary poses recur frequently in Matisse's work and are here combined in a composition underscoring the artist's ability to orchestrate an abundance of ornamental pattern and pure tones while still manintaining clarity, balance and strong visual impact." --Steven Nash, 125 Masterpieces from the Collection of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery (1987) click to see " La Musique " Posted by Sue-ching You 游素清 at 10:31 PM 1 comments Labels: reading and review Tuesday, April 1, 2008 Imperial Landscape Recently, I read an article " Imperial Landscape " by W.J.T. Mitchell . I have to admit that Mitchell ingeniously points out some new perspectives towards landscape and colonial representation, cultural identity. This is a whole new issue that I have never thought about, perhaps becasue of spending so little time in this subject. In general, any art majors know how...

Guernica, 1937

"No, painting was not invented to decorate houses. It is an instrument of war for attack and defence against the enemy." -- Pablo Picasso "In modern painting, every brushstroke has become precision work," the great draughtsman once said. Despite his brilliant facility, Picasso had to struggle over and over again for decades to achieve this precision anew. The drawings and prints illustrate the scope of his accomplishment. --Karl Ruhrberg, Art of the 20th Century (2005)

William Eggleston

Saw Eggleston on the National Geographic Channel this morning. My attention was drawn by his obvious and yet undiscribable images. Eggleston's keen eyes on details, capture with his "democratic camera", has shown a true expression of "a picture with thousands words". A close friend with Andy Warhol, no wonder that the press cannot really ask Eggleston to speak and explain further about his works. The answers are merely "I have never thought about it", "I don't have an answer for that", or "That is a very stupid question you've asked." A very cool old man with great attitude. As he replied to one of the press that he photographs everyday life nowadays. What can be more precise about what a contemporary artist is.

Taipei 101 and Forbidden City

Back to back, I watched the Taipei 101 and the Forbidden City on TV. Wang from the architect team and Lin Hong-min admit the height was not the originally planned scale. They were too busy to solve countless problems during construction, and they certainly felt that it was an impossible task to accomplish. A 508 meters tall building, 8 mega giant column structures, a more than 600 tons mass tuned damper on the height of more than 300 meters, and a structure combining strength and flexibility to against storms and earthquakes, all the above have made the Taipei 101 the bench mark of world architecture history. There are two parts of Forbidden City, I only saw part I. Starting the construction from early 1400. It had taken ten years for recruiting thousands craftsmen and gathering Nanmu logs and construction materials. 9999 rooms in the City, now is called the Palace Museum in Beijing. The front part of the City was used to be as the area for emperors meeting government officials, celebr...

Requiem by Mozart, 1791

A tranquil summer morning with Mozart , conducted by Karl Böhm 1. Requiem Eternal rest give unto them, O Lord; and let perpetual light shine on them. A hymn becometh Thee, O God, in Sion: and a vow should be paid to Thee in Jerusalem. O hear my prayer: all flesh shall come to Thee. Eternal rest give unto them, O Lord; and let perpetual light shine on them. Lord have mercy on us. Christ have mercy on us. Lord have mercy on us. 2. Dies IraeDay of wrath and doom impending, David’s word with Sibyl’s blending! Heaven and earth in ashes ending! Oh, what fear man’s bosom rendeth, When from heaven the Judge descendeth, On whose sentence all depeneth! more...

Oculus by Cloud Gate 2

The choreographer of Oculus(斷章) is Wu Kuo-chu (伍國柱). Part I and II are stunning and unique. Itching in heart and body expresses the awaken of desire. Repeat and fast moving body languages is the projection of one's behavior and mental images. Unique gestures of dancers are the best part I like the most. Between Part II and before the rain fall, that is the part should be revised. When the rain starts falling, dancers stand still on the stage, cameraman's accurate takes plus mind soothing music, it is like standing in front of The Angelus by Millet. This is the moment shows Wu's solid training in visual arts and aesthetics. The music and costume reminds me of Pina Bausch's Masurca Fogo. Oculus certainly shows influence from Bausch. It is true that, in some level, had created an ingenious and heart-touching piece.

Viola

" What light is light, if Silvia be not seen, What joy is joy, if Silvia be not by? Unless it be to think that she is by And feed upon the shadow of perfection. " …except I be by Silvia in the night, There is no music in the nightingale. Unless I look on Silvia in the day, There is no day for me to look upon." - Marc Norman & Tom Stoppard , 1998

Mahler Symphony no. 5

It is a nice thing to spend an evening with Moment Musical , a young musical group in Taiwan. When they are playing Mahler (1860-1911), every musician viberates tremendous love of music and devotion to the concert. In total of 5 movements in Symphony no.5, musicians and the conductor play the notes at full steam, but everyone on the stage literately takes a very interesting 10 seconds break between each movement. This is a style that I have never seen before. I am not sure if that is appropriate of not; however, every performer has showed their passion via music without doubt.

Wherever in the wastes

Wherever in the wastes of wrinkling sand Worn by the fan of ever flaming time Longing for human converse, we have pitched A camp for musing in some seldom spot Of not unkindly nurture, and let loose To roam and ponder those sand dromedaries Our dreams, the Master of the pilgrimage Cries, "Nay--the caravan goes ever on, The goal lies further than the morning star." -- W.B.
