a typhoon is going to hit the entire island tonight. whenever the natural disasters come close to where i live, i always feel fortunate to be safe and sheltered. able to stay close with my family.

learning
From the past 3 months, our study group meets 1-2 hours early before the class starts every Monday, Tuesday, and Friday. All of us have been devoting tremendous time and effort in order to pass the test. I believe none of us will forget the time we had together. After today, everyone will move on to different paths in life. Thanks to the technology, we can keep in touch much easier. I like how Nathan put this sentimental moment into a great perspective. He said: "After all, it is just a test. It is the learning process and time we have spent together worth remembering." A quite touching perspective he puts in his young age, even we have known this old saying by heart. It is always good to be reminded to see the bright side of whatever we choose to do.

water cube in beijing
Built for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, National Aquatics Center, Water Cube has been built one kilometer from the national stadium "Bird Nest". Every great building takes partnerships and brain powers to let any impossible plan come to reality. It looks like an enormous cube-shaped bundle of bubbles. 3500 air cushions are made of a plastic called ETFE and ten of thousands steel frames hold the structures from earthquakes, sand storms, fire, heavy rain, and temperature below 13 degree minus. Ingenious implementation of materials breaks away the stereotypical thinking when dealing with nature disasters and careless incidents .
The honeycomb-like steel frames are wrapped by double layered walls made by ETFE. The countless printed dots on ETFE, not only will keep the space warm or cool, but also will allow the maximum sunlight to the interior. There are 18 pipelines constantly checking and pumping the air to 3500 air cushions. A building with 20 thousands people's capacity, is also Eco designed. The cost of electricity for pumping the air to the air cushions is about the same amount as a household refrigerator. The engineers and designers also design a system to collect rain and heat for pool water and cold winter days. It is another example of demonstrating thinking out of the box and how creativity can solve impossible tasks around us.

A day to remember
The first day for direct flights across both straits. It is also the independence day in the USA. Travelers from various professions must feel convenience and time saving, and for an ordinary person like me feels the energy and positive outlook of Taiwan's economy. When USA is celebrating their national holiday, we are celebrating our giant step towards the booming of tourism industry. Cake, anyone?
