La Musique, 1939
"The themes of music and of two seated females in complementary poses recur frequently in Matisse's work and are here combined in a composition underscoring the artist's ability to orchestrate an abundance of ornamental pattern and pure tones while still manintaining clarity, balance and strong visual impact."
--Steven Nash, 125 Masterpieces from the Collection of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery (1987)

Imperial Landscape
Recently, I read an article "Imperial Landscape" by W.J.T. Mitchell. I have to admit that Mitchell ingeniously points out some new perspectives towards landscape and colonial representation, cultural identity. This is a whole new issue that I have never thought about, perhaps becasue of spending so little time in this subject. In general, any art majors know how a figure is inserted on the threadhold of a portraiture, but I believe only a few notice that the secret behind landscape paintings in 18th and 19th century in India, China, South Pacific, Africa, and Americas. I do not deny that impress by his opening statement and the first few pages, but somehow disagree on his gernerlized idea of crtiques from the past have been not doing a great job; however, I am very proud of Mitchell for speaking up for his belief and share with all readers. Thank him for opening a new perspective and contributing a new thinking to our world around us.
